About this event

In this workshop, we’ll be making a simple diorama - a personalised artwork in a lidded box. The theme is a secular icon or talisman with personal meaning and connection, such as a spirit animal, plant, place or person. This will be drawn, either monochrome or in colour, cut out and placed/glued into the box. The box will then be decorated inside and out with smaller drawings of things that relate and connect to the talisman. For example, if your personal talisman is a specific tree or bird, the box could be decorated inside out with fruits, flowers or other objects that relate or connect to the main motif.

The portable piece can be a placeholder for anything that is of significance and deeper meaning. It can be placed on a shelf or taken with you as a travel companion.

All materials will be provided for this workshop, including scissors and craft knives.

Artist Bio:

Cordula Marks Venters is a mixed media artist and illustrator based in Edinburgh. She creates 2-d and 3-d art and especially loves making dioramas. Her work has featured in many exhibitions, including the Royal Academy of Scotland, Linlithgow Burgh Halls and various galleries in and around Edinburgh. She has also created several books. She loves sharing her art and skills with others and has led workshops and classes on a wide range of themes. Her happy place is in a forest somewhere, probably walking with a dinosaur or two.

Donation:

There's an optional donation to go towards the running costs of the classes - this stops people booking up all the free tickets then not showing up! Eventbrite requires £1 to be entered in the box but we can refund that in cash when you attend the class, or you can put it towards a cup of tea from the kitchen :)

Organized by

Sketchy Beats is a not-for-profit arts space on Great Junction Street, Leith. It's an open platform for creatives of any kind to use and share their ideas with the public. The space is designed to be affordable and accessible to everyone - people who have never organised events before, musicians who have never played outside their own bedroom, artists who have never exhibited before. It aims to be a place where creativity brings the community together, without money being an obstacle.

Everything in the space is donation-based. If you want a cup of tea or coffee, you can help yourself and leave a small donation. If you want to bring your own alcohol, just leave a donation for corkage. If you want to organise your own event, it's free to book, we just ask for a donation from each person who comes in. If you are interested in booking the space for your own event, workshop, meet-up or rehearsal, send us a message!
