Description

Art Inspiring Change Seminar: How can we work with children and young-people to affect positive change in our communities?

Turner Contemporary

Wed 28th June 2017

10.30 – 4pm

A free one-day seminar about Art Inspiring Change, a pioneering child-led project, and exploring how we can work with children to affect positive change in our communities?

The seminar will discuss what the Art Inspiring Change project achieved, how we facilitate child-led leadership and how children can inspire us all to lead regeneration? Speakers will highlight successful child and youth-led projects and there will be opportunities to get involved in discussions with the Young Art Leaders who have worked on the project, as well as question some of the ideas and issues around child-led regeneration in a world café and panel discussion.

A light lunch as well as morning and afternoon refreshments will be provided. Donations welcome.

Art Inspiring Change is a child-led project that launched in January 2016, it is Turner Contemporary’s most ambitious learning initiative to date. We are working with 80 children from 4 primary schools – Holy Trinity & St Johns Primary School, Northdown Primary School, Palm Bay Primary School and Salmestone Primary School, between January 2016 and July 2017. The Young Arts Leaders (YALs) are supported by their chosen artists, a philosopher and gallery staff to inspire the whole town to engage with art, transforming Margate through physical and social change.

Art Inspiring Change is led by Turner Contemporary and funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Southeastern is the lead sponsor for Art Inspiring Change, supporting Margate and East Kent’s regeneration through its generosity and time. Art Inspiring Change is part of Turner Contemporary’s ongoing commitment to helping people see, think and learn differently by engaging with art in new ways and to the continued regeneration of Margate.

The seminar is held alongside an exhibition about Art Inspiring Change and the summer exhibitions which celebrate the importance of art and creativity, its capacity to empower all of us and make positive change. It brings together works by British sculptor Phyllida Barlow, British-Kenyan painter Michael Armitage and JMW Turner with artwork by young people from Kent and Africa. The gallery will becomes a space for making, discussion and exchange, whilst outside primary school children are transforming neglected sites in the town, as part of our unique Art Inspiring Change programme.
