Birth is an art.
Unfortunately, for some mothers their experience of maternity care is far from art - it's damaging rather than enhancing. Research is showing that birth trauma is not only psychological as in the form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but also physical. This physical trauma is increasingly recognized to constitute more than just perineal tears. There is a deeper more significant physical trauma which has long-term physical, psychological and social consequences for mothers and affects as many as 1 in 3 births. Then of course, there's the little-appreciated effects of a traumatic birth to the long term health of babies which is being uncovered.
Despite this much of the focus is on just giving stats (THE WHAT) but not much is being said about WHY this is happening in our maternity services - which is critical as this will lead us to HOW to prevent the trauma in the first place. Currently, the main talk on HOW is about increasing Caesareans, or picking up the pieces in the form of surgery or other interventions. This is not the best, cost-effective, long-term strategy, will raise interventions even more disrupting physiology, and it will not cure all mothers.
This summit is different. It's about how to prevent trauma by promoting better understanding of anatomy and woman-centred physiological practices. It's about giving those at the frontline ( midwives, doulas, mothers, students, obstetricians etc) a voice in the solutions.
So join us for this unique thought-provoking art of birth summit to find out how YOU can create what is said to be the much needed “art” in maternity services – a space for mothers and babies to maximize their physiological potential and have a positive birth independent of time and cost.
You will get the chance to critically interpret a model (called art) which bridges the divide between the holistic and technocratic philosophies of birth. & learn little known practical tips that will create better services for mothers, their babies - and birth workers!
The summit will use real life case studies and tools and cover much needed practical physiology, birth biomechanics, psychology etc that you can implement straight away, and that will give you the confidence to talk about the science underlying your practice (art). To advocate for your art.
