Week 2
A study of the enigmatic and unique Ruthwell Cross, placing it in the early part of the eighth century in Galloway, studying its content, the runic inscription, discussing where the artist had been trained and where he came from. The design and meaning of the cross is examined and the context, both religious and political, concluded.
Week 3
A study of the iconic Book of Kells and the authorship of its art and decoration looks at the context of its making, concluding its date and provenance. The connections with the Byzantine world and further east is also examined.
Week 4
The Macedonian Renaissance covers the period of Byzantine art and society through the 10th and 11th centuries. A wonderful era of ivory-carving and manuscript illumination, we cover the roots of this art and the connections with western art, with the Carolingian and Ottonian traditions.
Week 5
The last seminar will study the wonderful period of the 12th century Renaissance, illustrated in English art of the period. We look at stone sculpture, manuscript illumination and ivory-carving, identifying some of the most beautiful art to have survived from the medieval period.
