This exhibition presents the work of three London-based artists in their examination of nostalgia as a cultural phenomenon. Curated by Acme artist Eleanor McLean, Anemoia anchors a sense of home and comfort, while exploring how associations with objects can build communities.
Anemoia draws inspiration from John Koenig’s word-construction project, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, where the term is defined as a feeling of nostalgia for a time or place one has never experienced. The exhibition proposes that nostalgia can operate much like idioms in language: often rooted in folklore, idioms are tropes which elicit meaning figuratively and poetically.
Through their work across sculpture and installation, McLean, Pearch and Talkowski relate the tactile to the virtual and the poetic as makers of meaning. In doing so, the artists suggest that technology can facilitate curiosity and reflection in ways that could aid nostalgia in its construction and reinforcement of community.
