Art + Think: Uzo Igonu - Home and Belonging in a Multicultural World

By Artinfusion

Overview

Join Artinfusion’s Art + Think workshop — a mindful art experience that nurtures your wellbeing and deepens your connection to art.

In this Art + Think workshop, art historian Sabine Casparie will guide us in looking closely at artworks, exploring the artist’s interpretation and our own feelings around migration, home and belonging.

Uzo Igonu was one of the first people to move to London to work as an artist, arriving from his home country Nigeria in the 1940s. His work merges European and Igbo traditions and combines the visual languages of Western and African art. The Museum of the Home recently acquired a selection of 9 artworks which are now on temporary display.

What does home mean for you, and what does it mean to belong to a country, a city, a neighbourhood? What do you bring from your past and your culture? What happens when we move somewhere new, and how do the objects in our homes help us settle in?

Who is it for?

Anyone who wants to explore how art can support wellbeing and cultivate a deeper sense of connection and presence. You might be navigating stress or overwhelm, or simply wanting to slow down and experience a more mindful, meaningful way of engaging with art. No art knowledge is required. All English levels are welcome — the session is designed to be accessible, gentle and supportive.

What to expect?

Expect a calm, interactive session in a small group, blending:

  • Mindful looking & mindfulness practice — with Buse: We’ll begin with grounding and then use a selected artwork to guide gentle, moment-to-moment awareness. Together we’ll slow down, notice details with curiosity, and tune into our thoughts, emotions and body responses as we look.
  • Art insight & conversation — with Sabine: Exploration of Uzo Igonu’s work and the themes of home and belonging, with space for personal reflections and shared perspectives.
  • A supportive, welcoming atmosphere: You’re free to share as much or as little as feels comfortable.

What to bring?

It would be great if you could bring a small object from your home that symbolises a sense of belonging for you, for optional sharing with the group.

We already keep our prices low, but 5 accessible spaces are available for those who need them. If you can, please pay our supporter's rate to help us keep our workshops accessible and continue making art available to everyone as a source of connection and wellbeing.
