Description


Max is a Bristol based Artist whose practice focuses on drawing and painting influenced by place memory and imagination.

Max’s contemporary drawing practice is underpinned by a degree in fine art at the University of Brighton and two years studying and being part of the education programme at the Royal Drawing School in London. In his drawing he often show complex landscapes imagery being collaged from his daily experience, his travels, dreams and memories. He also allows his imagination to feature. Max has exhibited widely in the Uk and has won awards for his work most recently being the winner of the Jackson art prize in 2016 . He has completed several international residencies, and is an experienced workshop leader.


This course is for creatives at all levels wanting to expand their skills processes and explore new ways of creating compositions with manipulated imagery. Max will guide and nurture your experience working to your individual experience level.

Drawing Place memories and imagination

To develop a unique personal visual language, discover new mark making techniques and ways of combining materials. Through playful exploration, guided teaching and idea development students will make an imaginative, distinctive mixed media drawing/painting. We will be using a variety of matierals including watercolourspencils, inks, various drawing materials and experimenting with process.

week 1 - Mark making. Through a series of exercises and games students will experiment with different mark making techniques and applications of materials. Students will be encouraged to respond imaginatively to accidents and surprising outcomes.

week 2 - Microcosm. From observational study to Imaginative leap, students will experience how images can change and grow with surprising and creative results.

week 3 - Maps and Symbols. Students will explore topography through their developing visual language.

week 4 - Masterpiece. Drawing on ideas and techniques developed in previous sessions students have the chance to put it all together in a large scale mixed media artwork of their own conception
