Michael a U3A member from Brisbane doing a PhD on AI in the U3A. He explores the unique strengths of older people (their superpowers) through the idea of "eldragogy"—a teaching approach tailored to older learners that includes the use of AI. Eldragogy is a type of adult education (andragogy), but it's different from traditional teaching methods meant for children. He prefers this term over "geragogy," which often treats older learners as needing special education focused on therapy or compensation for decline, rather than recognizing their capabilities.

Andrew, a Professor at the University of Surrey’s Institute for people-centred AI, will describe some of the technologies available to help people access information and services. The talk will consider research activities at the university and some commercial offerings in the space, for example the university spin-out Signapse which uses AI to provide sign language access to information. The talk will also touch on the development of so-called companion AI, which provides people with access to conversational systems that is being used in care of older adults and many other application areas. The talk will also consider some of the challenges and ethical issues of the use of such technologies.
