  • What will we cover?

In this Artist Book Project, you will learn the fundamentals of the bookbinding process while experimenting with various materials, tools, and techniques used in the craft. We will fold, cut, and sew paper to create pieces of art in the form of Book ' Objects' with experimental covers such as cases, boxes, and natural materials that may feature cloth, leaves, and decorative paper. You will explore the techniques of concertina, pamphlets, Japanese, and back-to-back binding as suited for the personal designs. Additionally, there will be an opportunity to discuss suppliers, tools, and books, as well as explore further courses, processes, and skills related to bookbinding.

Students will be required to bring some collected objects and materials, such as drawings, photographs, papers, etc. * Materials are all included. *

Calligraphy, drawing and other mixed-media techniques will be explored in the class.

Further details will be given prior to the class.

  • What will I achieve?

By the end of this course, you should be able to...

  • Identify grain direction in paper
  • Safely and correctly use basic bookbinding tools and materials
  • Make a book from any findings, collectables, and recyclable materials.
  • Make a binding using pamphlet stitch techniques and folds.
  • Make concertina books
  • Make a book of your own, being playful with design techniques
