Event description

Description

This session is for artists interested in artist led learning practice. It will provide an overview of the different opportunities and entry points for artists into the gallery and museums learning sector, for both National and Local Authority institutions.

The workshop will explore the position of learning within the institutions and different models of artist led learning practice. Lisa will look at both the practical and theoretical aspect of engagement with different audiences both informal and formal. She will explore fee structures, required documentation and artist expectations of audience participation, alongside workshop structures and content.

There will an opportunity for attendees to undertake a participatory activity to explore potential intersections of artist practice and a learning context.

Currently the Learning Programme Manager at Nottingham Contemporary, Lisa Jacques has worked across the East Midlands. She has 25 years of cultural learning experience and also freelances offering project management, workshop development and facilitation. She also delivers consultancy on gallery and museums learning.

The learning programmes she develops are based on models of action-led research and participatory practice. Her preference is to employ a co-production method of development and a co-construction method of delivery. This creates place-based programmes that challenge participants, her peers and herself through observation and consultation.

Lisa has commissioned local, regional and national artists to work on learning programmes as a part of their artistic practice and development of their engagement development with audiences in a learning context. This has led to a range of artist commissions including Niki Pugh, Kate Owens, Maria Zahle, Monster Chetwynd and most recently Laura Eldret.

Lisa has delivered acquisitions of artworks produced as part of a learning programme at New Walk Museum & Art Gallery and ensures the Learning programmes become part of the institutional archive including participants work. Lisa was a recipient of the Marsh Awards for Excellence in Gallery Education, 2013, presented by Engage, the lead advocacy and training network for gallery education.
