Event description

Description

Aikaterini Gegisian introduces her practice, exploring questions of identity, nationhood and collective memory. Her videos, collage and sculpture bring together visual forms from different eras, people and civilisations and often reflect on her own Greek-Armenian heritage.

Aikaterini Gegisian lives and works between England and Greece. In 2015, she was one of the exhibiting artists at the Armenian Pavilion, 56th Venice Biennale, which received the Golden Lion for best national participation. She has been awarded the Nagoya University Award (2001) and she was shortlisted for the First Book Award (2015). In 2016, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art organised the first survey of her moving image practice. Her work was presented at recent survey exhibitions including 56th Venice Biennale (Italy), 6th Moscow Biennale (Russia), 3rd Mardin Biennale (Turkey), 2nd Tallin Photomonth (Estonia), 1st Thessaloniki Biennale (Greece) and 6th Gyumri Biennale (Armenia). Her work has also been shown in museums, galleries and in festivals internationally including DEPO, Istanbul; BALTIC Centre of Contemporary Art, Newcastle; Calvert 22 Foundation, London; Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, UK; Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Athens; NARS Foundation, New York; Centre for Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki, Greece; Kasseler Dok Fest, Germany; Oberhausen Film Festival, Germany; Videoformes Festival, France among others. Works of the artist are included in prominent private and museum collections.
