Description

Join us to hear about the artistic practice of Cape Town-based composer and musician Neo Muyanga, who will be producing a new commission for Liverpool Biennial 2020.

Muyanga’s work spans diverse genres, from classical to hip-hop, jazz through to pop. He writes, plays and composes for chorus, chamber and large ensembles. In the mid-1990s he co-founded the critically acclaimed acoustic jazz guitar duo BLK Sonshine with Masauko Chipembere. He has recently produced major collaborations with artist William Kentridge, The Royal Shakespeare Company and Handspring Puppet Company. In 2008 Muyanga co-founded the Pan African Space Station, a pop-up live radio studio, performance and exhibition space with Chimurenga’s publishing editor, Ntone Edjabe.

His recorded albums include Fire, Famine Plague and Earthquake (2007), Good Life (2009), Dipalo (2011) and Second-hand reading (2016). Other published works include the music plays Memory of how it feels (2010), The Flower of Shembe (2012) and the opera Heart of Redness (2015).
