Artistic Research with the IKO Speaker System: Theory and Praxis for Sound
Date and time
A lecture and demonstration of the unique IKO immersive speaker system
About this event
In this lecture and demonstration, artists and researchers Gerriet K. Sharma and Angela McArthur will highlight key learning points in their research and practice working for over 10 years with the IKO speaker system.
The IKO speaker is an icosahedral loudspeaker array that presents a new way for producing immersive sound environments. Unlike conventional speaker systems, IKO spatialises sound using the strengths of wall reflections. This beamforming produces phantom sound sources on the surfaces of the performance space, allowing the composer to produce sculptural sound phenomena. The developers describe it as “a new manifestation of spatial sound in contemporary computer music” that is as much an instrument as a playback system. Not only this, but it is also the world’s most compact Higher Order Ambisonics (HOA) sound system.
The session will be a chance to hear the IKO system in action and engage in discussions about strategies for composing with this novel system for immersive audio. The event will be of interest to artists, music lovers, sound designers, composers, experts in audio technology and acoustics, and performers. Come and enjoy this unique opportunity to experience sound and music!
This event has been jointly organised by the Sonic Research Group and the Acoustics Research Group of London South Bank University with the support of the UK Acoustics Network (acoustics.ac.uk) under the umbrella of the Institute of Acoustics. The event is part of a wider London South Bank University lecture series around applied research and new opportunities. The IKO system will be presented in a limited number of instutions in the UK, having been brought over for Soundstack 2019 - find out about other IKO events here: http://angelamcarthur.com/elementor-1413/
This event is free but advance booking is essential.
