Artists Talk Back: Joy as resistance in the face of eugenics

Join our round table talk where artists, a part of the Words Matter exhibition, discuss their creative practise as a form of activism. This conversation will be led by Tarik Elmoutawakil. We will also be joined by artsists involved in the Words Matter exhibition.
The event is FREE, as part of the Words Matter exhibition event programme.

Miss Jacqui
Miss Jacqui is a dynamic artist, celebrated for her powerful poetry and soulful music. As a Spoken Word Artist and Songwriter, she masterfully blends words and melodies to inspire and challenge perception. A proud wheelchair user and advocate, she transforms experience into empowerment, using her artistry to amplify disabled voices, spark change and inspire authenticity and confidence.
Sonny Nwachukwu
Sonny Nwachukwu is a writer and director based across Peterborough and London. His work often uncovers hidden stories and has been presented at Southbank Centre, Northern Contemporary Dance School (Riley Theatre) and Brixton House. He is Artistic Director of Gateway Arts, where he produces multidisciplinary work that champions accessibility and new approaches to storytelling.
Tarik Elmoutawakil
The event with be hosted by Tarik Elmoutawakil. He was a part of the Words Matter project (STAGE ONE), which has now become an exhibition. Tarik is a creative producer and independent artist, creator of Brownton Abbey and co-founder and Artist Director at The Marlborough Theatre, in Brighton. His work largely focuses on making creatively engaging spaces that centre marginalised people. Whether that’s through intersectionally mindful programming at The Marlborough Theatre, producing and delivering an un-conference (‘The Black Joy Sessions’) or curating, staging and hosting the Afrofuturistic Performance party, Brownton Abbey.
Words Matter Exhibition
Words Matter is a multi-disciplinary exhibition showcasing the works of twelve artists who participated in a six-month knowledge exchange programme, exploring UCL’s historic role in promoting the pseudoscience of eugenics. The exhibition is free and open to all at UCL East campus, Marshgate building, E20 2AE.
Access to Venue
Parking
There is no parking at on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park or across the UCL East campus. There are a limited number of Blue Badge holder parking spaces. Please specify whether you need one of these parking spaces in the order when confirming your ticket, and we will make arrangements for you.
Wheelchair Access
Entry into the Marshgate building is step-free access. The rountable talk is taking place in the boardroom room 512) which is located on the 5th floor. The exhibition is held on the on First Floor Galleries. All floorc can be accessed by the stairs or a lift. There are also wheelchair accessible toilets on each floor.
