Event description
Opportunity to experiment and learn new skills with artist Nor Greenhalgh developed during the Elder Vernacular project.

About this event

Explore the local landscape, ecology and learn how to make biodegradable paints and sculpture with artist Nor Greenhalgh. Reflect on what you would like to give back to the soil and create a biodegradable artwork to be ritually composted at the end of the day.

We will take a walk around the allotments and surrounding area to explore how artists materials might be sourced from and support local ecology in East Oxford. Elder Stubbs allotments sits at the heart of a rich landscape of former marsh, clay and rare alkaline fen. After getting a sense of the landscape we will share practical techniques for making and using materials grown onsite or sourced sustainably nearby. These include vibrant inks, paint recipes, and handmade paper suitable for painting on or sculpting with. We will then have time for reflection on what you would like to make, perhaps a simple artwork or a symbolic offering. You will have the option to give your artwork back to the soil at the closing ritual after the workshop.

If the weather is poor, after exploring outdoors we will use indoor space at Florence Park for making and learning. If the weather is fine, we will gather around a cosy firepit at Elder Stubbs allotment. Dress warm with outdoor shoes for our walk, which will be at a gentle pace taking up to 1hr. Toilet facilities are available at Florence Park and Elder Stubbs allotment (accessible toilets at Florence Park only, approx 3min walk from the allotment). You can bring your own lunch, or buy lunch from the nearby cafe in the park which has a range of options for different diets. After the workshop, we will have a 1hr break before the composting ritual at Naturescape in Florence Park, where the work we've made will be added to compost for next year's projects.
