Guest Speakers:

Sarah Smizz - Artist and Researcher

"I am an artist, illustrative-mapper, recently qualified radiotherapist & current Practice-led PhD candidate at SHU, UK. My practice is concerned with exploring power-structures, and questioning the systems around us. I’m most known for my work live-drawing and capturing conferences, workshops and experiences and bringing people and their experiences and needs back into service improvements and projects. I am currently testing and pushing the tensions and boundaries that lie within the overlap of art and healthcare practices, with drawing at the centre of this investigation. My research is motivated by using creative practice to question power injustices within healthcare, and beyond, and I want to design more engaging and critical patient information on cancer treatment, side effects and the survivorship experience within Radiotherapy.I have exhibited my work world-wide including Postmasters Gallery, NYC, and TATE Britain, UK. I have been commissioned by the BBC, NHS England, Channel 4, The Guardian, TED, and many more organizations. I won the National UK Award for Radiotherapist of the Year (2016), & more recently a Guardian Education Award (2018) and multiple of other awards such as the ‘ best mHabitat healthcare digital driven tool’ award, and in the pipeline publishing a book with Macmillan Cancer Services (2019). "

Chris Singleton - Theatre and Spoken Word Artist

"I am a theatre and spoken word artist, but started out (after graduating) as an Account Exec at an advertising company - thinking I needed a 'proper job'. I was essentially miserable for two years before landing a job at a theatre company - subsequently not passing my probation because the company wasn't a good fit for me and my mental health didn't respond well to the situation - and ultimately deciding to go it freelance. I have worked for companies across Yorkshire and the country, including Leeds Playhouse, Mind the Gap Theatre Company, CAST in Doncaster, Junction in Goole and Castaway Goole. I work predominantly in learning disability theatre - focussing on creating more opportunities for LD actors. Additionally, I recently directed a piece for independent learning disabled artist Paul Wilshaw about mental health and masculinity."

The first Arts and Minds Event will be held on 5 Nov

Refreshments provided. This event will also raise money for the charity Student Minds.
