Using Poetry as a Research Methodology by Dr Christina Schwabenland

Wednesday 21 February 3:00-4:30pm at the Postgraduate and CPD Centre, Room P102

The purpose of this talk is to give an overview of the different ways in which management and organisational researchers draw on poetry in their research. Poetry has played a role in research since the groundbreaking work by Gareth Morgan (1986, 1997) on Images of Organization in which he identified a number of root metaphors that structure our thinking about organisations (and, as Ricoeur notes, a metaphor is ‘a poem in miniature’). Since then the field has developed considerably, with authors such as Louise Grisoni (who gave a workshop last year) and Monica Kostera integrating poetry into their research practice. ‘Poetic logic’ offers an alternative way of theorizing through associational thinking. The presentation will outline different approaches, illustrated with examples drawn from research into diversity management.
Dr Christina Schwabenland has published a research monograph, Metaphor and Dialectic in Managing Diversity, a book chapter and several articles drawn from research using poetic methods. She is interested in organisations’ contribution to social justice and in the centrality of arts to human experience. She is the Director of the Centre for Leadership Innovation within the Business and Management Research Institute at the University of Bedfordshire, the UK Chapter Lead for the Humanistic Management Network, a member of the editorial board for the online journal Murmurations and, from July 2018, a member of the board of the Standing Conference on Organizational Symbolism (SCOS).
