This all-day session with a mix of practical activities, presentations and discussions, will look at all aspects of caring for a collection.

Delegates will look at the main causes of damage and deterioration for a range of objects and materials, and how to minimise the risk to objects. Appropriate methods and materials to use will be considered, as well as suppliers and possible sources of funding for collection care needs. The session aims to provide delegates with a basic introduction to caring for a collection.

Who should attend?

This session is suitable for anyone, paid or volunteer, who works with a collection. No previous knowledge is necessary.

Learning objectives

Delegates will:

learn the main risks to collections and how to minimise them
undertake a condition assessment of an object
consider how to improve display and storage conditions
practice safe handling and packing of objects
understand the main policies and plans relating to collection care and what to include in them

How does this session relate to Arts Council England’s Accreditation Standard?

This session will help you make steps towards ensuring the care of your collection meets Accreditation Standards Section 6: Care for and Conserve Collections and Section 3.3 A clear and workable Emergency Plan.

Trainer

Helena Jaeschke ACR, FIIC is an accredited conservator with a degree in archaeological conservation and more than 40 years’ experience working with museums and collections in the UK and overseas. She supports museums across the southwest with all aspects of caring for their collections.
