Event description

Description

Arts Emergency aims to encourage and empower young people, who have talent and enthusiasm for a subject that sits under the arts or humanities umbrella, but who may not have connections within the creative industries or higher education. We are dedicated to supporting the next generation of young writers, artists, dancers, academics, comedians, journalists, philosophers, actors, psychologists, musicians, games designers, illustrators, architects and more through one-to-one mentoring and unique opportunities available via our large volunteer network.

We are welcoming over 15 brilliant new young people to our Manchester mentoring programme in January 2018 and we would love for you to join us as their mentor! Here's a little more information about our programme and what mentoring entails:

What does an Arts Emergency mentor do and how much time does it take?

  • Arts Emergency mentors work voluntarily with a young person over the course of a year, helping them to gain confidence, connections and the advice and guidance they need to succeed in their chosen subject/industry.
  • With the support of Arts Emergency and our network, mentoring pairs decide on a number of goals for the year and then work towards achieving them.
  • Mentor pairs are expected to have one face to face meeting each month ideally lasting about an hour. In between sessions you may find you communicate by e-mail, skype, text etc. We encourage flexibility during busy periods e.g. exams, starting new jobs, moving house etc.

How does the mentor matching process work?

  • Prospective mentors will need to attend a training session in September/October 2017 or will need to have been trained in previous years.
  • We will be over recruiting 15 year 12 students in October/November 2017.
  • Mentor pairs will be matched before the end of November 2017. We will go into this process more during training. It is worth noting that we endeavour to match as many mentors as we can, but occasionally we are not able to find a student with an interest in the area trained mentors specialise in and are therefore unable to guarantee you a mentee in the 17/18 cohort.
  • If you are allocated a mentee, you will asked to undergo an enhanced DBS check, (paid for by Arts Emergency).
  • Mentor pairs will be introduced for the first time at our introductory event, taking place in late January 2018.
  • Mentoring relationships last one full calendar year, January - January. This means you will be there to support your mentee in the run up to Year 12 exams, throughout their summer break between Years 12 and 13 where they might be looking for work experience, and into Year 13 when many will be drafting their UCAS statements and thinking about university.

What are Arts Emergency looking for in a prospective mentor?

  • Our mentors are all different which is what we love, but in general they are all able to relate well to people, are good at problem solving or talking though issues, reliable and committed and able to provide insight from their personal experiences.
  • Most of our mentors have studied an arts or humanities subject at university level and/or work in the creative industries.
  • Below is a list of the areas that our mentors have focussed on throughout 16/17.

- Architecture - Fashion - Comedy - Journalism - Politics & Activism - Academia - Dance - Marketing - Psychology - Acting - Music - English Lit/Lang - Interior Design - Museums - Publishing - Art & Design - Film & TV - Sociology - Art History - Games Design - Philosophy - Theatre - Music Tech - Classics - History - Photography - Writing -

Mentoring can be a really rewarding experience and we'd love you to be a part of the work we are doing, so please sign up and join us!
