Event description

Description

Bradford’s voluntary and community sector has always been a thriving culture of small home-grown locally rooted organisations. These have been built by people in working class communities facing hardship and poverty coming together to collectively campaign against injustice and provide much needed services to their neighbourhoods. With increasing rents and rates, many of these small organisations now face financial difficulties.

Inviting you to a meeting. Tuesday 28th November 1pm to 3pm. At the Arts and Resources Centre for the Community

We think we have a solution to this problem The Arts and Resources Centre for the Community (ARCC) is a large building in Little Germany managed and part owned by Bradford Resource Centre. In the past few years the building has been largely unused due to funding cuts resulting in the closure of groups that used to live there. At present the space is used by Bradford Resource Centre for its continuing training programme and by Bradford Metropolitan Food Bank.

The building is a necessary home for the Food Bank but is too big and expensive for Bradford Resource Centre to maintain on its own. We hope that other groups will come and join us in the ARCC. They will get a city-centre base with car parking and shared facilities. We will be able to maintain and run our building efficiently. Together we will have a chance to collectively rebuild the voluntary and community sector we are currently in danger of losing.

Rents will be set on a sliding scale and there may be opportunities for everything from temporary hot-desking to long-term leases where groups could invest in adapting and refurbishing their space. The meeting on 28th November is about finding out what groups need and finding volunteers to put time and energy into redeveloping the centre - come and join us, everyone welcome!

FAQs

Is the building accessible?

Unfortunately, right now the building isn't fully accessible. The meeting will be on the first floor and there is no lift available. We're committed to fixing this but can't do this before the meeting on 28 November. For people who can't attend the event, we'll circulate a questionnaire.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

How to find BRC: Bradford Resource Centre is based in the “Arts & Resources Centre for the Community” (ARCC) at 17-21 Chapel Street, BD1 5DT in Little Germany at the city centre end of Leeds Road.

Walking & public transport: We are about 10 minutes walk from both Bradford Interchange (rail and bus) and Forster Square railway station. If you get lost, ask directions for Leeds Road or Little Germany.

From the Interchange – walk down the hill with the Bradford Hotel on your left then turn right at the cross roads (traffic lights) – walk past the T&A building (local newspaper) the road veers right – keep following it (with the Broadway Shopping Centre on your left) until you reach the Job Centre (on your right). Cross the road and walk up Chapel Street. Chapel Street is a one-way street that runs uphill from the city centre end of Leeds Road. The ARCC is the first and only car park on the left as you go up the hill. It is on the corner of Chapel Street and Cater Street (just downhill from YoYo cafe). There are notices saying “Arts & Resources Centre for the Community” on the outside of the building). The car park has wrought iron railings saying “The Old Quaker School” – see marker on Google maps (https://goo.gl/maps/x9jALFwQwjp)

Driving: Drivers coming off the M62/M606 and following signs for Bradford City centre will arrive in the city centre by coming down Manchester Road (A641). To get to Little Germany turn right (second exit) at the roundabout at the bottom of the hill in the city centre – drive straight ahead through two sets of lights – you will now be driving along the side of the Broadway Shopping Centre on your left. At the end of the shopping Centre you will reach Little Germany on your left. Continue ahead starting to go up the hill on Leeds Road. Almost immediately you will see the recently re-developed Eastbrook Hall on your left – turn left at the lights at the end of Eastbrook Hall. You are now on Chapel Street.

We have a car-park which you are welcome to use – ENTRANCE TO THE BUILDING FROM THE CAR PARK. Preference is given to people with disabilities.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, just come along.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Yes, that's ok. We'll just ask you to sign in to the event so we have a record of who attends.
