Event description
Artists, Academics and Mental Health Practitioners Symposium on the role of collaborative arts in supporting Mental health and connection.

About this Event

A symposium that brings together Artists , Academics and Mental Health practitioners to explore collaborative Arts role in supporting young people's mental health and aspects of loneliness.

Referrals for loneliness have increased over the past few years at 42nd Street (a young peoples mental health charity in Manchester). We asked artists and young people to come together to explore the experience and see if art has any answers. They produced films, music, theatre, public realm and exhibitions of their work exploring young people’s sense of being ALONE and being TOGETHER. This culminates in an exhibition of the work at The Horsfall Gallery, Great Ancoats Street running from 10th Sept to the 27th Sept ( Tues- Friday 1-5pm ).

The symposium will explore the role of the arts in society and try to uncover what aspect of artistic activity is beneficial to young people in regards to mental health. We want to bring interested people together to look at how can we work with those who don't get or take up the opportunity to get involved in arts activity.

The themes of the symposium will be Art, Loneliness and Mental health.

We are keen for you to come and discuss these aspects and look at how we can work together to make the work as effective as possible.

The day will include input from

Artists who worked on the project including film ( Humberto Valez) , music ( Brighter sound), public realm ( Tasha Whittle and Billy colours) , Theatre (Tricia Coleman) and visual arts ( Manchester Craft and Design Centre). Creative producer at 42nd Street/ The Horsfall Rod Kippen.

Academics who worked on the ground breaking report Loneliness Connects Us: Young people exploring and experiencing youth loneliness and friendship. Janet Batsleer and James Duggan
