Event description

Description

Arts Therapists have been practising in Northern Ireland for over forty years in a wide variety of settings and for the first time Art Therapists, Dramatherapists and Music Therapists have come together to form Arts Therapies NI, an innovative and unique Community Interest Company (CIC), a not for profit company.

Arts Therapists are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), the statutory regulator. The HCPC confers the legally protected titles of Art Therapist, Art Psychotherapist, Music Therapist, Dramatherapist, and defines Arts Therapists as: "a psychological therapist who has arts-based experience plus training in psychological interventions using drama, music or art as their primary mode of communication.”

Dr Caryl Sibbett established and led the MSc in Art Therapy at Queens' University Belfast in 2002 with continuous training in Art Therapy in Northern Ireland until 01/2016 when it paused to evolve. The new MSc Art Therapy aims to start in Autumn 2018 in the Belfast School of Art, Ulster University (as with all new courses, subject to HCPC approval and University validation). Music Therapy training is in Limerick and Dramatherapy in Maynooth.

Ulster University has a long tradition as a centre of excellence and with the emerging new building is currently transforming the landscape daily in the Cathedral Quarters. In addition to taking in the amazing views from the campus, attendees will learn of the work of Belfast School of Art and its plans for a new MSc Art Therapy programme.

This open day will include presentations from keynote speakers with the aims of: (i) showcasing Arts Therapies over the decades in Northern Ireland, (ii) demonstrating how Arts Therapies are effective in today's health, care and educational settings, and (iii) promoting the proposed new MSc Art Therapy at the Belfast School of Art, Ulster University.

The day will be of interest to professionals working in mental health, Arts Therapies, education and other persons interested in psychological wellbeing; those interested in studying art therapy; managers and commissioners of services.
