Anxiety is the most common co-occurring disorder in people with autism spectrum disorders (Nason 2014 p43). Constant stress on the central nervous system from sensory, cognitive, social and emotional vulnerabilities can leave one prone to anxiety, leaving the autistic on high alert. It is important to help the child feel safe and accepted in a complex neurotypical world which is not always set up to deal with autism.

This workshop will help participants explore:

  • Types of anxiety and how it is particularly relevant to autistics

  • How we can change the environment to be a less anxiety provoking

  • How the child may learn ways to help regulate their nervous system better.

  • Provide a number of practical tools that can be used to reduce anxiety.

  • Participants will be able to learn to help stretch the comfort zones of autistics in a respectful way so that they are less prone to experience anxiety.

The Empower project is a Big Lottery funded initiative through the Reaching Out Supporting Families Programme which support Families across Mid Ulster and Antrim & Newtownabbey Council areas. The focus of the project is to support children under 12 with Autism, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia, their parents and the wider family circle to enhance confidence and learn together to develop skills to support their children.
