Event description

Description

When we hear of Autism or ASD, there is often a focus on boys, which to a point has influenced research, theory and practice in working with people living with autism. The problem however is that this has filtered down so that the girls may be overlooked or diagnosed with other conditions. This workshop is about first looking at some of the theories of autism and how this may put some girls with autism at a disadvantage. There is then a focus on the implications of both male and female stereotypes can have both on the person living with autism and the general society in which we all live in. In order to fully understand this we hear directly from both girls and women diagnosed with autism. We also look at some of the more practical differences between girls and boys that we need to be aware of i.e. social understanding, friendships building, social communication, and social imagination; and how these differences may have an overall impact on girls within an educational and mental health context. The workshop finishes with a focus in helping us to understand how to support girls to feel less vulnerable and facilitate further independence going into adulthood.

The Empower project is a Big Lottery funded initiative through the Reaching Out Supporting Families Programme which support Families across Mid Ulster and Antrim & Newtownabbey Council areas. The focus of the project is to support children under 12 with Autism, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia, their parents and the wider family circle to enhance confidence and learn together to develop skills to support their children.
