About this Event

Talks

Altitude and Attitude - Tori JamesTori James, at the age of 25, became the first Welsh woman to climb Mount Everest in 2007. Tori stars in the BBC documentary ‘On Top of the World’ and she is also the author of ‘Peak Performance’. Here she will talk about how a range of skills and subjects, from teamwork to understanding human physiology are needed to become an adventurer!

She is a motivational speaker and consultant delivering leadership training, team and youth development projects. Tori is the President of Girlguiding Cymru, a Fellow of British Exploring and an ambassador for the Duke of Edinburgh’s. Award in Wales. She is also featured in two new children’s books for 2019 about women, 'Fantastic Female Adventurers' and 'Genod Gwych a Merched Medrus'.

Inspiring dinosaurs. - Cindy Howells. Curator PalaeontologyDinosaurs are just one of many, many groups of reptiles but they have become iconic through their appeal to all ages. However much of what you see pictured or written about them in the media is often inaccurate if not completely wrong. Dinosaur information shouldn’t be dumbed down to the point of inaccuracy just because they’re thought to be only suitable for young children. Studying prehistoric life at any age can lead into the most amazing insights into so many other fields of science (and other subjects), but we do need to start by picking out the true facts. This talk will aim to give you a few nuggets of information about dinosaurs, and other prehistoric life, which can hopefully be used to inspire and educate at all levels.

Workshop choices and descriptions -All sessions are at 11am & 12.30pm

Primary A1/ B1 : Encouraging pupils to question - Dr Anita Shaw. Director, STEMpowered LearningLooking for ways to encourage pupils to think and to question? This workshop will show you how you can develop this in your lessons, without already knowing the answers yourself. We will look at a range of real world STEM videos and develop methods for eliciting questions from your pupils. We will take one video further with an experiment designed to answer some of the questions that come out of the video.

A2/B2: Dippy about Dinosaurs - Liam Doyle & Heather Jackson, Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum WalesJoin our Museum learning officers to discover lots of activities to help make your dinosaur topic fantastic. The session will give ideas to take back into the classroom, from maths activities which explore how fast dinosaurs moved, to fun literacy activities like naming your own dinosaur.

Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure has been brought about by the Natural History Museum, in partnership with the Garfield Weston Foundation and supported by Dell EMC and Williams & Hill.

A3/ B3 STEMterprise Jennie Devine, Education Officer NFU, In this exciting practical session, we’ll be throwing elements of Ready Steady Cook, The Apprentice and Countryfile into a blender to introduce our brand new cross-curricular project schemes that use real life problems as engaging contexts for learning and are tailored to the new curriculum for Wales. Expect a session of ideas for exciting practical activities and a free scheme of teaching and learning resources that will allow you to infuse your wider curriculum with engaging STEM learning opportunities.

This behind the scenes session gives you an opportunity to visit our Palaeontology collection area and find out more about the fossils in our collection.

Secondary A4/B4: Real Research in the Classroom - Glen Gilchrist. Area lead: Mathematics and Science, Central South Consortium Joint Education ServiceIn the context of “Curriculum for Wales” and “Education in Wales: Our national mission”, how do we provide valuable, context rich learning experiences in the science classroom? What role does practical work have in developing skills and scientific understanding? How can our young people engage with authentic and “real” research? To explore these questions and engage with a range of contextual practical experiments join Glen to discuss “Real Research” in our classrooms.

A5/B5: Exploring gender balance in the science classroom - Stephanie Bevan. – Institute of Physics and Laura Roberts TechnocampsGender in STEM - Why is there such a gender imbalance in STEM subjects and what can we do to address it?Whose responsibility is it for tackling gender balance in subject choice? Stephanie will be outlining the Improving Gender Balance Pilot Scheme in Wales and what we hope to achieve with the schools involved. Laura will talk about approaches to tackle this gender imbalance based on research carried out across Europe by Microsoft and 10 years of experience working in STEM outreach across Wales. What can teachers do to make sure every student is empowered to choose the right subjects for them and how can we encourage girls to remain engaged with STEM during their secondary school years.

A6: Escape the Chemistry Classroom - Dayna Mason - Royal Society of ChemistryHelp your students to develop problem-solving, knowledge and practical skills by challenging them to "Escape the Classroom". Come to this session to try it yourself and see just how easy it is to set up.

B6: Ever thought of Engineering? Sue Quirk Teacher Coodinator . Royal Academy of Engineering The workshop will take a closer look at the Royal Academy of Engineering’s resources for teachers, both the free online resources and resource boxes provide through the Teacher Networks. The Academy's engineering-themed learning and teaching resources have been developed in partnership with teachers and engineers to engage and inspire students about a career in engineering. The resources are linked to the KS2 and KS3 STEM curriculum and can easily be adapted for use at KS4. The resources provide engineering-themed learning activities for use in a STEM club, for a STEM challenge day or to enhance and add context to the STEM curriculum, so a good fit with the pedagogy of Curriculum for Wales. The first 15 teachers to sign up for the workshop will receive a resource box

Deinosoriaid ysbrydoledig. Cindy Howells. Curadur PaleontolegMae deinosoriaid yn ddim ond un o lawer o grwpiau o ymlusgiaid ond maen nhw wedi dod yn eiconig trwy eu hapêl i bob oed. Fodd bynnag, mae llawer o'r hyn a welwch mewn llun neu wedi'i ysgrifennu amdanynt yn y cyfryngau yn aml yn anghywir. Gall astudio bywyd cynhanesyddol ar unrhyw oedran arwain at y fewnwelediadau rhyfeddol i gynifer o feysydd gwyddoniaeth eraill (a phynciau eraill), ond mae angen i ni ddechrau trwy ddewis y gwir ffeithiau. Bydd y sgwrs hon yn anelu at roi ychydig o wybodaeth i chi am ddeinosoriaid, a bywyd cynhanesyddol y gellir ei ddefnyddio i ysbrydoli ac addysgu ar bob lefel.

Dewisiadau a disgrifiadau gweithdy - Mae'r sesiynau i gyd am 11am a 12.30pm

Cynradd
