ASE (NI) Online Conference 17th June 2022 – updated programme
The conference this year is online, there will be a keynote and a choice of workshops you can attend. The conference will be run on zoom, so you can follow it at home or in school. You will be provided with a code to access different workshops. There will be an opportunity to interact and ask questions. A week after the conference you will be able to access all the sessions as recordings. Details of the programme are listed below.
Current cost is £5 for an ASE member and £10 for a non member.

Our keynote is Paul Hart and Anthony Jinman, Antarctic explorers, and Climate Change Educators.
Paul and Anthony will talk about the evidence of Climate Change they have come across in their travels. They are both currently in the Antarctic investigating untrodden areas to conduct science into climate change and sustainability. It will be exciting to see their photos and hear about their findings when they return.

- ETI Building Capacity, John Murray, Senior Inspector, Science and Technology, ETI (Education and Training Inspectorate (NI) (Audience – Primary and Post Primary).
- The operation and impact of a "Hearts and Minds” school/science network in challenging Covid times. Looking back at work done/looking forward to developing this work further Dr Patrick Shevlin, Dr Patrick Shevlin is the President of the Association for Science Education, Northern Ireland (ASENI) and a research fellow at EQI, DCU and Institute of Education. Patrick work for the ETI as an inspector for 26 years.
- Developing students’ understanding of Chemistry through effective Practical work. David Patterson is a Chemistry teacher and Head of Digital Learning at Aldenham School. David was awarded the RSC Schools Education Award in 2020 for his development of integrated instructions.
- The Science of Climate Change. Stuart Farmer is the Institute of Physics education manager for Scotland. He will look at evidence, data, classroom practical and positive actions relating to Climate Change and Sustainability. (Audience – Primary and Post Primary)
- Using Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction in the classroom. This is a research based lesson strategy that all teachers should know. Maeve Carey, Abbey Christian Brothers School, Newry.
- Improving learning in science; what can we apply from educational research Alastair Gittner, Sheffield Hallam University. In this session Alastair will explore some of the current thinking from cognitive psychology and neuroscience and how it may be applied to teaching and learning.
- Frontier Science Lecture - Gene Technology – Application Of CRISPR/Cas genome editing by developing vectors that are resistant to infectious diseases they otherwise would carry. Paul Mc Veigh, Queens University Belfast.
Technician Programme
- Tips and Tricks for Technicians – Michelle McAnallen, St Patrick's High School, Newry. Michelle will share hints and tips from her experiences as a technician with the delegates.
- Creating, Leading and developing a STEM club - Community STEM Club leader Dr Katherine Forsey CSciTeach shares her experience, enthusiasm and a host of free resources to help you establish and grow your own school-based STEM Club.
- Technicians leadership and leading others – Simon Quinnell ASE Chair 2020-2021, University of York.
- From glow sticks to Rhubarb – A very popular workshop from the National Conference. Jayne will show a range of demonstrations and experiments.

- The science of creative effective learning environments, Kathryn Forsey CSci Teach.
- Teaching for Climate Change and Sustainability in Northern Ireland, Gerry Hughes, Sentinus.
- Building a model wind turbine and other renewables-based activities for Primary School, Peter Mc Alister, Educational Consultant, and former SELB advisor
- Hayley Sherrard, SSERC Scotland, Primary and Early Years team, Practical ideas to link science, literacy and expressive arts with technology skills and application.
- Sarah Eames, (Primary Science Teacher’s Trust), Creating Scientists in the Early Years Classroom, using books and activities to ensure children are exposed to lots of science play.
- Paul Tyler (Primary Science Teacher’s Trust), Collecting data to bring Primary Science to life, Science in primary schools is often very observation driven but with a bit of planning and some free apps you can bring your science investigations to life.
