“Working scientifically is more than doing practical work”

It is widely accepted that practical science is a key part of the science curriculum in both primary and secondary phases. Better practical science leads to better learning outcomes and positive attitudes to Science (and more learners moving into a STEM career).

This conference will give you ideas and strategies to improve practical provision whichever phase you teach in.

Confirmed speakers

Secondary workshop descriptions:

James Rolfe

Science Rocks - Pondering the oft-repeated question, "how do I know which equation to use?", I was inspired by Oliver Caviglioli and his work on cognitive load theory to try a new approach to learning and revising The Big 23 equations for exams. (James is well known for videoing short demonstrations using the camera app on his phone, for use in class. James upload these videos onto YouTube so students could access them for revision & flipped learning homework)

Heidi Dobbs - RSC

Three ways to introduce Titrations

Titrations are now a required practical but often feel inaccessible to KS4 students. This short session will equip you with three ideas for introducing the titrations session without the intimidation (or breakage risk) of a burette.

Sarah Longshaw – ASE 11-19 committee

Making practical easier and cheaper with microscale chemistry

Trial a selection of activities; consider where you could incorporate them into your teaching and the benefits of using microscale including developing skills, saving resource and teaching synoptically.

Iain Davison - Data Harvest

Enjoy hands-on practicals for both Primary and Secondary using your own device. There will be a circus of experiments for you to try including cars on ramps, reaction-times, speed of sound, gravity, heating and many more. Please download/install the App/Software “EasySense2” (it’s free) a week before the event on your iPhone, iPad, Android phone, Android tablet, Chromebook, lap-top or mac-book.

Primary workshops:

Laurel Armstrong

Using stories to teach science. Find out how to make use of some well-loved story books in delivering exciting and hands-on science lessons. Lots of different activities to try. Suitable for any age group.

Practical Action (Sarah Eames)

Ditch the Dirt - a challenge to filter dirty water for children 6 years to 14 years old. This classroom activity enables pupils to investigate ways of making dirty water cleaner through sieving and filtering. It makes international links with Kenya where two out of three people do not have access to clean drinking water. We will also briefly look at the other challenges which encourage cross-curricular links.
