A one day CPD event tailor-made for school science technicians. The day will comprise of some excellent hands-on sessions and an exclusive exhibition at the home of the ASE - University of Hertfordshire.

A1 Careers in Health Tom Warrender , Medical Mavericks

Discover the dozens of amazing careers in the NHS your students can access with levels 9-4 at GCSE. Hands on activities & free resources to take away to your school.

A2 Improving student understanding through more effective practical work Simon Quinnell National Technicians Lead, NSLC

Technicians have a strong role to play in advocating effective practical work and making sure that the practical work we deliver is relevant and develops students skills and knowledge.

This session will explore what effective practical work really means and how we can amend the practicals we already do to make sure that our students practical experience is the best it can be. We will also trail some practicals and explore how we can develop them to more fully support and progress student skills, so they are ready for the required practicals at GCSE and A-Level.

A3 CLEAPSS Make it Jane Major, CLEAPSS

Come and have a go at making small scale electrolysis apparatus and then try out what you have made by investigating the electrolysis of copper chloride! Pick up ideas for other diy projects you can easily tackle yourselves back at work.

Bring along you smart phone, Tablet or Chromebook with the Free Vernier Graphical Analysis app installed www.inds.co.uk/s/ga4. We will have a circus of experiments setup covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Some experiments will be covering core practical’s. The instruction sheet of each experiment will be available for you to take home.

B2 Improving the technical service Simon Quinnell National Technicians Lead, NSLC

The technical service in a schools science department is critical to the departments success.

This session will get you to explore ways to develop and improve your service for yourselves, teachers and ultimately for the benefits of students. We shall look at requisitions and prep room systems, working better with others, prioritising and time management and how to promote what technician do in your school.

B3 Visualising science - practicals to enhance visual science.Catherine Mellor TIMSTAR

Hands on practical session where you can try out activities and experiments which benefit from visual enhancement. This session will have examples and demonstrations for Chemistry Physics and Biology.

You will have the opportunity to see what visualisers can do for your school. We will cover making the most of all the features and functions such as attachment to a microscope, making and showing live video and slow motion and time lapse video.

C1 Dry ice demonstrations for Primary and Secondary Science Mike Ashe, Chillistick

The safe use and storage of dry ice will be discussed and a number of demonstrations aimed at elements of the national curriculum will be presented including;

Making clouds, Rockets, (Safe) explosions, Floating Bubble and Fogging Drinks and more.

C2 “New GCSE’s no equipment and no money”! How we have done it! Lyn Rawlings

C3 Chemical Storage and the Labexpert Stock Control System Chris Pambou, Labexpert

This course is ideal for all technicians and is designed to provide the relevant information on chemical storage, chemical store organisation and requirements, including layouts, space, storage, environmental conditions and much more.

During the session the following aspects will be covered:

  • Legislation on Health & Safety, including the Health and Safety at Work 1974 and its subsequent Regulations.
  • Chemical stores
    • Different type of stores
    • Store requirements
