Event Details

ASE West of England's Annual Conference will take place at Bath Spa University. The programme will consist of a range of workshops for primary and secondary educators with a special keynote talk, along with a small exhibition. Everyone is welcome and this event is free for members.

Pay and Display parking is available on site at Bath Spa's Newton Park campus (£2 for the day).

9:45-10:30    Keynote 'The Measure of all Things'

Measurement is at the heart of all science and engineering. And progress in science and engineering is often linked to progress in metrology – the science of measurement. After all, if we cannot measure something then we cannot begin to understand it (science) or improve it (engineering). Measurement is the quantitative comparison of an unknown quantity with a standard. In the International System of Units – the ‘SI’ – there are seven standard quantities called the ‘base units’: the second, metre, kilogram, ampere, kelvin, candela and mole. Some of these, such as the second, the metre and the kilogram, we encounter in everyday life. Amazingly all the physical measurements we make can be traced back to combinations of these ‘base units’. In this talk I will explain the how the International System of Units works, and why, from May 2019 scientists are planning subtle but profound changes in the definitions of four of these base units – the kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole.

Workshop A choices

A1 Primary: Embedding chemistry into cross-curricular topics Beth Anderson, Royal Society of Chemistry

This workshop will focus on practical ways to introduce chemistry into topic-based teaching particularly for KS2 using resources available on the Royal Society of Chemistry website. You will try out simple experiments that can be linked to the themes of space, WW2 and the Vikings. Delegates will also receive a sample of UV sensitive beads and a choice of measuring cylinder or beaker.

A2 Primary: Butterflies and moths for teaching science Kerry Merry, Butterfly Conservation

This workshop will explore different options/equipment for rearing caterpillars and how your school grounds can be enhanced to provide a habitat for butterflies and moths. We will look at how these beautiful insects can be used to perfectly illustrate various curriculum topics including conservation, life-cycles, adaptations and habitats as well as non-science subjects. Butterfly & Lifecycle classroom posters available for participants.

A3: Secondary: Science capital Leyla Pattison, Churchill Academy and Sixth Form​

The Science Capital Teaching Approach is a method of promoting engagement and attainment in science. This session will explore the importance of the concept and suggest practical applications of incorporating this approach into lessons to maximise its potential.

A4: Secondary: Applying Cognitive Science Principles to Practical Work Bill Wilkinson, Beechen Cliff School

This workshop will consider how to make students think carefully about what they're about to do and how to use slow practicals, fully guided practicals and dual coding to get students to do practicals well.

 

Workshop B choices 

B1: Primary: Unearthing Creative Learning  Sam Fieldhouse, Wessex Archaeology

Using archaeology as a starting point for science learning. Get hands on and dressed up to discover how archaeology can make pupils truly dig science with artefacts, 3D prints and cutting edge virtual reality.

B2: Primary/Lower Secondary: Why Space Education Matters  Jo Richardson, Space Outreach Educator and UK Space Ambassador

This workshop illustrates how the topic of "Space" can be used as a context to engage, enthuse and excite children in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) and in doing so highlight the vast array of potential career opportunities available within the ever expanding UK Space Industry.

B3: Secondary: Improving Secondary Science  Kerry Madrick, Head of Science at Severn Vale School, Gloucester

In this workshop, Kerry will take you through the seven recommendations of the Education Endowment Foundations report into improving secondary science. You will have an opportunity to interrogate the seven recommendations in greater depth and reflect on your own practice. Kerry will also share activities and resources to help you implement some of the guidance back in your own classroom.

B4: Secondary: Storytelling in Science  Ellie Johnson, Marine Academy Plymouth

This workshop will consider how can we use stories about science to engage our students. We will look at several books and students' responses to them.
