CPD Cluster Group for Post primary HODs/PRIMARY WAU Coordinators or people who wish to develop skills for these roles

This new and exciting opportunity offers post primary HODS, primary World around Us Co-ordinators, members of SLTs, or indeed aspiring members of SLTS, HODs or WAU coordinators the chance to network in an organised way with colleagues on a regular basis your skills to promote improvement in Science within your school, hosted and led by Dr. Paddy Shevlin, President ASE(NI) and recently retired from the Education and Training Inspectorate. This is a cross-phase post primary – primary cluster but focused on meeting both primary and post primary needs, as well as, eventually as a further goal, post primary-primary transition needs.

Presentation for first cluster meeting:

1. Dr Paddy Shevlin will speak on “Self evaluation leading to improvement with minimum paper and maximum usefulness”. Following on from his ASE leadership and management science workshop at the ASE biennial conference in June 2017 in St Marys University College. He will recap and further develop the ideas and working practices he outlined at this workshop

There will be further sessions in term 2 and term 3 which will comprise3 slots

1. initial input, recapping and building on previous cluster sessions.

2. input from a cluster member on work they have developed since the last session

3. input from a cluster member on work they have developed since the last session

THE OVERALL AND CLEAR AND UNCHANGING FOCUS OF THE CLUSTER WILL BE

A WORKING PRACTICES FOR INTERNAL SELF EVALUATION WITHIN SCIENCE - LEADERSHIP, MANAGEMMENT, SELF EVALUATION. MINIMUM PAPER, MAXIMUM IMPACT/USEFULNESS

LINKED TO

B EXTERNAL SELF EVALUATION – NAMELY NSPECTION

TO MEET EFFECTIVELY THIS FOCUS;

The underlying aims of the cluster group which will run once a term are

1. To facilitate ongoing networking between schools, focusing on pragmatic things to do re: improvement that involves no unnecessary added bureaucratic burden

2. Disseminate effective best practice in science

3. Develop the use of self-evaluation leading to improvement – share among the cluster group best practice to do this. – link this to external self evaluation namely INSPECTION

The cluster group will meet once a term from 4.15 pm to 5.15 pm at a date agreed at the end of each cluster group. We will move around schools within the cluster as a venue where they volunteer. Coffee and an informal oral trouble shooting session led by Dr Shevlin will precede the official start at 3.30 for those that arrive early for the main session at 4.15 but this is purely to allow time for those travelling to arrive at 4.15 and is not an essential part of the session. However a key part will be that all cluster members at some point in a future cluster session will present what they have been doing based on the advice they have received at previous cluster sessions. A website will be available to the cluster group members where the presentations made at each cluster are available to cluster members for reflection on and use. Attendance at this cluster group is designed to provide continuous professional development for the attendees since it is provided by the Association of Science education the lead professional body for science teachers in GB and NI. Membership of the ASE is not necessary to attend the cluster.
