About this event

Community • LGBT

This interactive workshop introduces how asexuality was treated as a medical issue in the Victorian Age and its impact on contemporary media representation. It will begin by examining how nineteenth-century doctors constructed a set of symptoms that supposedly diagnosed individuals as asexual. Together, we’ll look at how this conceptualisation is mirrored – or challenged – in contemporary popular culture representations of asexuality. Participants are encouraged to bring in their own examples to discuss, alongside those provided by the workshop leader.

What to expect

The workshop will begin with a short introductory talk on the history of asexual medicalisation, followed by work in small groups and general discussion. Participants are encouraged to offer their own examples of asexual representation: these should be introduced with a short description of the media and the character they want to discuss.

About the Facilitator

Claudia Sterbini is a PhD student at the University of Edinburgh. Her project explores the construction of pathological asexuality at the turn of the twentieth century. She is interested in queer history, the medical humanities, Victorian literature, and generally all that is queer and ace.
