Event description

Description

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) looks to equip frontline staff and the wider community with the necessary skills to intervene when someone is finding it difficult to go on with life.

The 15-hour workshop held over two days teaches participants to connect, understand and assist people who may be at risk of suicide.

Co-delivered by two qualified and certified Master ASIST trainers, this 2 Day Course is designed to increase your skills, abilities and confidence in your job role to support those at risk of suicide and be better prepared to deal with those at risk.

As an ASIST-trained first aid intervention Caregiver, you will be better able to:

  • Identify people who have thoughts of suicide

  • Understand how your beliefs and attitudes can affect suicide interventions.

  • Seek and share and understanding of the reasons for thoughts of suicide and the reasons for living.

  • Review current risk and develop a plan to increase safety from suicidal behaviour for an agreed amount of time.

  • Follow up on all the safety commitments, accessing further help as needed.

Who is ASIST for?

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is for everyone 16 or older—regardless of prior experience—who wants to be able to provide suicide first aid.

To date, we have delivered The Two Day ASIST Course to a wide participant base including mental health professionals, nurses, doctors, pharmacists, teachers, counsellors, youth workers, police and prison staff, school support staff, carers, clergy, community volunteers and the wider community.

Many professionals attend ASIST because suicide intervention skills are essential for their work but suicide prevention also needs to happen in the community.

Why is ASIST important?

Developed in 1983 and regularly updated to reflect improvements in knowledge and practice, ASIST is the world’s leading suicide intervention workshop. During the two-day interactive session, participants learn to intervene and help prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Worldwide, almost 2,000,000 people have taken the workshop, and studies have proven that the ASIST method helps reduce suicidal feelings for those at risk.

Workshop features:

• Presentations and guidance from two LivingWorks registered Master trainers

• A scientifically proven intervention model

• Powerful audiovisual learning aids

• Group discussions

• Skills practice and development

• A balance of challenge and safety

ASIST has saved and changed hundreds of thousands of lives around the world.
