DESCRIPTION
This is an exciting and innovative career development opportunity. The Ask and Act scheme is aimed at professionals who are likely to be in jobs where violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence may be an issue for their client group, who are in a position to 'Ask and Act'. Learners will receive thorough subject knowledge and pedagogical techniques designed to enable them to train their colleagues further on how best to support survivors and their families. Moving forward from the training itself, learners will receive regular refresher sessions and newsletters with information about developments within the field. The course spans three sessions; incorporating case studies, theory and practical elements.
“Ask and Act” is a process of targeted enquiry to be practiced across the Public Service to identify violence against women, domestic abuse, and sexual violence. The term ‘targeted enquiry’ describes the recognition of indicators of violence against women, domestic abuse, and sexual violence as a prompt for a professional to ask their client whether they have been affected by any of these issues.
Welsh Women’s Aid have been contracted by the Welsh Government to train professionals to deliver the Ask and Act programme for Group 2 and 3 of the National Training Framework.
AIMS:
- To increase identification of those experiencing violence against women, domestic abuse, and sexual violence.
- To offer referrals and interventions for those identified which provide specialist support based on the risk and need of the client.
- To begin to create a culture across the Public Service where addressing violence against women, domestic abuse, and sexual violence is understood in the correct context, where disclosure is accepted and facilitated, and support is appropriate and consistent.
- To improve the response to those who experience violence against women, domestic abuse, and sexual violence with other additional support needs such as substance misuse and mental health.
- To proactively engage with those who are vulnerable and hidden, at the earliest opportunity, rather than only reactively engaging with those who are in crisis or at imminent risk of serious harm.
Following the course, you will be able to register for an account and gain access to the full resources needed to deliver the training in your area. You will also receive regular updates and have access to practice development sessions as well and refreshers (both live or as an e-learnining package).
If you have any questions about the training, please contact training@welshwomensaid.org.uk
HEALTH WARNING
It is statistically likely that you will have at least one victim / survivor amongst the delegates and as the trainer, the onus is on you to ensure that the training session is not re-traumatising for them. This means challenging offensive remarks about victims / survivors and taking steps to minimise them being viewed as ‘out there’ rather than in the room with you.
The odds are also high that there will be at least one perpetrator. Similarly, any excusing remarks should be challenged since without this, the training could end up being used by the abuser as justification for their behaviour.
Violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence is a highly sensitive subject that arouses strong feelings – whether or not this is as a consequence of direct personal experience. It is of paramount importance that you are self-aware and take care of yourself during the training. The trainer will be available at hand for you if necessary.
