Event description

Please note this session is tailored to Line Mangers. To book onto the session for Clinical Staff, please see our other listing at

Medics against Violence and the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit provide training on domestic abuse for non-specialists (ie those who do not work in the domestic abuse field) who work in professions where they may encounter those suffering abuse and have an opportunity to reach out to them and offer some help and support. Domestic abuse affects 1 in 5 women in their lifespan, it also affects men. Those affected are our patients, our clients, our colleagues and our friends.

Evidence shows that if a trusted professional raises the issue it may encourage those experiencing abuse to take action. The main reason people don't offer help is that they don't know where to start. We can help with that.

We provide training for a wide range of health professionals, vets, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and others in a position to reach out to those suffering abuse such as hairdressers. We also recognise that training line managers is important in every sphere of work.

You do not need prior training or experience of working with domestic abuse to come along to our training.

Our training day incorporates elements of bystander training and training on a tried and tested method of encouraging professionals to raise the issue with those they work with, AVDR.

We aim to increase your awareness and understanding of domestic abuse and to help you to realise the valuable role you can play in supporting those experiencing abuse just by following a few simple steps.

Training will be led by Dr Christine Goodall, Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Oral Surgery, founder of Medics against Violence and former Chief Inspector Graham Goulden from the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit. We have been training professionals in Scotland since 2010.
