Please join THRIVE Hachette in collaboration with Spread the Word for an unmissable evening aimed at aspiring writers from under-represented backgrounds who are interested in learning more about the Non-Fiction book submission process. Nikesh Shukla will be in conversation with four leading Hachette Non-Fiction editors - Briony Gowlett, Andrew James, Sharmaine Lovegrove and Shoaib Rokadiya on our stunning Hachette rooftop.

Topics that will be covered in panel discussion and Q&A to include:

  • An overview of the Non-Fiction editor’s role and how they work with writers
  • The type of books the editors are looking to acquire at the moment
  • How editors and writers work together throughout the book process from acquisition to publication

Please arrive from 6:30pm for a prompt 7pm start. The panel talk and Q&A will finish at 8:45pm.There will be the opportunity to network over drinks and nibbles after the talk.

The panel includes:

  • Nikesh Shukla is the author of four novels. His latest, The Boxer was released in June 2019 by Hachette Children’s Book. His debut novel, Coconut Unlimited, was shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award 2010 and longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize 2010. Nikesh is also the editor of the bestselling essay collection, The Good Immigrant and the recent follow-up The Good Immigrant USA, which was published by Dialogue Books in March 2019. He is the co-founder of the literary journal, The Good Journal and The Good Literary Agency
  • Briony Gowlett is a non-fiction Publisher at Hodder & Stoughton, responsible for acquiring and publishing commercial narrative non-fiction. Her publishing career began in the contracts department of Penguin Books and prior to joining Hodder & Stoughton Briony has held a variety of editorial posts at Random House and Simon & Schuster. Her list of books and authors is highly eclectic with specialisms and interests including popular culture, platform talent, TV and music, extraordinary life stories and cult books for dedicated audiences or fan bases.
  • Andrew James is Senior Commissioning Editor at Jessica Kingsley Publishers, commissioning books for their market-leading Gender Diversity list. He is co-chair of the Hachette Pride Network and featured on The Bookseller’s 2018 list of Rising Stars. His authors include Charlie Craggs, Owl and Fox Fisher, Jamie Windust, Meg-John Barker and Juno Roche
  • Sharmaine Lovegrove is the publisher of Dialogue Books and co-chair of Hachette's Changing the Story. She was named FutureBook’s Person of the Year in 2018, in recognition for her work promoting inclusivity and positive change within the books sector.
  • Shoaib Rokadiya is Commissioning Editor at Wildfire Books, an imprint of the Headline Publishing Group. Over the years, he has worked with authors including Grayson Perry, Shami Chakrabarti, Sayeeda Warsi, Bill McKibben and Sarfraz Manzoor.

The event will be FREE but a deposit of £5 will be charged to secure a place. The full deposit will be refunded to attendees on the night. We particularly encourage writers of colour to attend this event.
