Aspects of the Conservation of Japanese Books

About this Event

Conservation treatment examples of Japanese books will be shown by Robert Minte, Senior Paper Conservator at the Bodleian Library and Kyoko Kusunoki and Matthias Sotiras, Japanese Paintings Conservators at the British Museum. The talk will cover basic knowledge on the history of Japanese books and their binding/mounting styles. In addition, the overview of the conservation treatments will include approaches in Japan and common techniques such as infilling repairs and re-sewing using examples of Hokusai’s illustrated books at the British Museum. Challenging pigment consolidation in Nara-ehon from the mid-Edo period (mid-17th century) at the Bodleian Library will also be presented.
