This course is for Government communicators who wish to build their understanding of best practice evaluation techniques. Progressing beyond foundation level, this course focuses on how to measure the effectiveness of communications activity and on understanding how this contributes to the broader evaluation framework within their team or department. The course covers the competencies for Practitioner level evaluation of communication activity, based on the GCS best practice approach.
NB It is a requirement that delegates complete the one hour foundation level e-learning module - Communications Evaluation before attending the Communications Evaluation (Practitioner Level)
This course is not intended for those who have previously completed the GCS
Introduction to Evaluation course.
How will I benefit?
By the end of this course delegates will be able to:
- define communication evaluation and the Government’s approach to it
- recognise the benefits of evaluating press activity
- understand the four stage process outlined in the GCS Guide to Evaluating Government Communications Activity
- recognise how good evaluation is underpinned by good measurement and understand how to identify the right types of data to measure the success of the activities that they are working on
- know what is needed to make evaluation effective and cost-effective
About the course leaders
Ian Theo
Ian is Head of Evaluation at GCS, Prime Minister’s Office and Cabinet
Office Communications providing advice and support across
government on how to evaluate communication activity. Ian was a
senior member of the research and insight team at the Central Office
of Information and previously worked in market research, advertising,
and live events in the electricity industry.

Registration is at 9.15am for an 9.30 am start.
