Event description

Description

The phrase ‘best interests’ does not always mean there has been a process of best interests decision-making in accordance with The Mental Capacity Act 2005. This programme will help you understand how to maximise and capitalise on a person’s decision-making capacity, and ensure that any use of restrictions are necessary, ethical and legal. Best practice would mean the five principles of the Mental Capacity Act should underpin the organisation and
service culture.

The programme includes two days of theoretical training, delivered by an expert consultant. You will then complete a workplace assignment and return in six weeks for feedback. You will need to attend all three days and successfully complete assessments to gain a certificate of completion.

Who should attend?
This programme is for managers who are directly responsible for undertaking Mental Capacity assessments, and who want to become more competent in Mental Capacity Act assessments and best interest processes.

The programme will support service wide compliance with The Mental Capacity Act 2005 - (Code of Practice).

Aims and outcomes
The following areas will be explored in detail:

  • How current guidance relates to practice

  • Different aspects of assumption of capacity and the competences needed to assess capacity

  • Considerations needed for best interest and unwise decision making

  • The principle of least restriction

  • Service wide implementation of the five key principles of the Act

Please note: to complete the training you must also attend a third day on 16 April 2018
