Course Outline;
This course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills required to conduct comprehensive and empathetic assessments of older person.
Epidemiology
- Describe population trends in the UK
- Understand the implications of the ageing population on health and social care systems
Comprehensive Getriatric Assessment
- Understand the components of CGA and when it should be undertaken
- Act on issues identified during a comprehensive getriatric assessment to ensure that effective interventions are put in place
- Use increased knowledge to identify when to refer on to a specialist for further assessment
Frailty
- Understand the concept of frailty and it's complications for older adults
- Identify common frailty assessment tools used in practice
- Develop confidence in the use of frailty assessments in a community setting
- Be aware of common frailty syndromes and how to prevent these
- Identify strategies to slow the progression of frailty
Physical Assessment of the Older Adult
- Assess older people in your care considering the impact of age-related changes on physical symptoms and signs
- Describe common age-related health issues and how to implement strategies to address these
- Understand the implications of advancing age on disease depcific treatments options
Cognitive Health In Older Adults
- Differentiate between dementia and delirium
- Demonstrate different tools used to assess cognitive health
- Understand the key management and treatment interventions in delirium
- Be aware of the Mental Capacity Act and the potential role of advocates
Deconditioning and Falls
- Understand the concept of deconditioning and when it may occur
- Describe the importance and relevance of falls in older people
- Demonstrate understanding of prevention and assessment of falls risk
- Identify the evidence-based interventions to improve mobility and prevent falls
Polypharmacy
- Describe the implications of ploypharmacy for older adults
- Be aware of common drug side-effects
- Understand the prescribing cascade and the role of deprescribing
Advance Care Planning
- Understand different terms used in advance care planning
- Discuss for who and when and advance care plan is appropriate
- Develop confidence and skills to begin advance care plan discussions
THIS TRAINING IS FOR THOSE WHO QUALIFY FOR CPD WHITHIN CHESHIRE & MERSEYSIDE PRIMARY CARE TEAMS ONLY.
You will be required to give details of your NMC number and Practice/PCN name.
The following Primary Care staff are eligible for CPD funding: All registered Nurses , Midwives , Art Therapists , Drama therapists , Music therapists , Chiropodists/podiatrists , Dietitians, Occupational therapists , Operating Department Practitioners , Orthoptists , Osteopaths , Paramedics , Physiotherapists , Prosthetists and Orthotists, Radiographers , Speech and language therapists.
Will be free to book and attend but the cost (£208.33) will be taken out of your £333 CPD Allowance for this year. Charges for inappropriate roles will apply.
