Overview

This unit equips qualified Assessors with the competence required to assess the Environmental Good Practice and Sustainability unit within the Level 7 Diploma in Engineering. It meets the mandatory competence requirements for all EAL assessors delivering this element of the qualification.

The course develops understanding and practical application of sustainability and environmental good practice within engineering contexts, enabling assessors to evaluate learners’ work in relation to environmental impact, compliance, and continual improvement in sustainable engineering practices.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, participants will be able to:

1. Understand environmental impact – including the causes and effects of greenhouse gases, pollution, and biodiversity loss in engineering activities.

2. Understand regulation and compliance – including environmental legislation, management systems, funding for low-carbon solutions, and environmental codes of practice.

3. Apply sustainability knowledge – by assessing engineering practices for environmental impact, identifying opportunities for improvement, and promoting pollution prevention and biodiversity enhancement.

Content

Participants will explore:
- Environmental impacts and their causes
- Legislation and regulation at Scottish, UK, and international levels
- Funding opportunities for sustainable engineering initiatives
- Tools such as carbon calculations and aspects/impacts registers
- Best practices for reducing environmental impact and improving sustainability in engineering

Delivery and Assessment

The course is delivered entirely online through self-directed study, supported by access to digital learning materials. Assessment is completed remotely through written submissions addressing set questions and tasks, designed to demonstrate both knowledge and applied competence.

Learners’ submissions will be assessed on a competent or not yet competent basis, with feedback and tutor contact provided as required to support learning.

Recommended Entry

- Holders of the Assessor Qualification L&D9 (or equivalent).
