Description

Assisted dying and palliative care: exploring different perspectives

An opportunity to discuss, debate and share ideas.

Assisted dying for terminally ill, mentally competent adults with 6 months or less to live has been legal in Oregon since 1997. Numerous other states in the USA have since followed Oregon’s lead, most recently California and Colorado.

Closer to home the Rob Marris Assisted Dying Bill was rejected by the House of Commons in 2015 by 330 votes to 118. Yet with more and more dying people taking matters into their own hands and a fresh legal challenge launched in January, the assisted dying debate looks set to be reignited in 2017.

This event, coinciding with the Association of Palliative Medicine’s Supportive and Palliative Care conference, will explore the relationship between assisted dying and end-of-life care.

Can assisted dying be part of good end-of-life care?

How can laws protect the rights of dying people and those that care for them?

What can we learn from jurisdictions that have already changed the law?

Join us as palliative care professionals and members of the public come together to discuss this important issue. This is not a pro or anti assisted dying event, it is an opportunity to discuss, debate and share ideas.

Contributions from speakers will be followed by a Q and A session and complimentary refreshments.

Tickets are free, but please register to avoid disappointment as capacity is limited.
