"Astronomical and Atmospheric Events Depicted in the ‘Augsburg Wunderzeichenbuch’ (The Book of Miracles)”

Speaker: Mary McIntyre FRAS

Tthe Augsburg Wunderzeichenbuch is a 16th Century illuminated manuscript that was produced in Germany. It consists of 123 hand painted folios depicting various ‘miraculous events’ and loosely linking them to biblical and non-biblical events. Many of the folios depict perfectly ordinary astronomical events such as eclipses, meteor showers, comets and atmospheric optics displays but painted in a dramatic yet charming style. This talk takes a look at some of the interesting astronomy events contained within this book.

Mary McIntyre, an Oxfordshire based amateur astronomer, astrophotographer, speaker, author and podcast co-host who has had a life-long interest in Astronomy. With her husband Mark they are both keen astrophotographers and enjoy imaging from thier home observatory under the dark skies of rural Oxfordshire. Her images have appeared in astronomy magazines, astronomy books, local and national newspapers, and on various tv shows. She also love astronomy sketching because it makes her feel better “connected” with the object she's observing. Mary appeared on the May 2023 episode of The Sky at Night on BBC4 talking about the GMN meteor camera network.
