Event description

Description

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the previously advertised talk is no longer possible. The below replacement talk will be taking place instead.

Hubble's Variable Nebula

John Lightfoot

In the 1920s Edwin Hubble found fame by demonstrating that spiral nebulae
are `island universes'; galaxies far outside our own. By measuring their distances
and red-shifts he showed the Universe to be expanding. These were his great
discoveries, but they were not his first. In 1916 he found an object more
humble but perhaps equally surprising - a nebula whose shape changes from
week to week. This talk will follow the story of `Hubble's Variable Nebula', from
its discovery until the present day.
