About the talk:
“We Are Stardust” is about “stellar nucleosynthesis” which is one of the most astonishing stories in science about the amazing processes that produce the elements from which everything is made. This is nothing less than the transmutation of the elements – the long-sought goal of alchemists. It is also the history of the people who revealed these incredible mysteries. This second talk picks up the story from the death throes of massive stars, through supernovae and the merging of neutron stars.
About the Speaker:
Simon Gardner's studies included atomic and nuclear physics at Oxford University. He worked as a radar engineer and data analyst, on the Isle of Wight and elsewhere. He had another shorter career in linguistics along the way. Since retirement, studying astrophysics is one of several time-consuming hobbies that keep him out of mischief. Mostly. He is currently Editor of New Zenith and acting Programme Organiser for Vectis Astronomical Society.
About the Host:
The Vectis Astronomical Society (www.wightstronomy.org) meets on the 4th Friday of every month, except for December. The talks are open to the general public.
