Course Overview

This course provides an overview of key definitions & structures within the asylum system in order to support best practice within statutory social work with asylum-seekers and refugees.

Course suitability

Social workers and other professionals interested in the subject.

Aims and objectives

By completing this one-day course participants will be able to:

  1. Recognise and identify the statutory duties of the local authority to asylum seekers
  2. Know how to establish someone’s status and entitlements
  3. Identify and review if an individual has recourse to public funds
  4. Understand appropriate hospital discharges for asylum seekers
  5. Discuss the legal framework you will work within with asylum seekers and where and when you would seek legal advice
  6. Identify appropriate types of accommodation for asylum seekers and the routes to access these
