Event description
Engaging with grassroots football communities directly is vital in the journey to improve their experiences and reduce discrimination.

About this Event

About this Event

The event is being held within the Fare Network Football People Action Weeks; and will give players, coaches, managers, parents and the public an opportunity to have further discussions on the important issue of racism and discrimination in football.

The 2018/19 football season continued to display a catalogue of racial incidents, from the England players in the Euro qualifying round in Montenegro, to the Championship player Duane Holmes who was abused in the dugout, all the way to grassroots football where local player suffered abuse in a cup final.

These events demonstrate there is still a real need for solutions and constructive and informed discussions not just within the BAME community in football but also within the wider community itself. These headline experiences often over shadow the work that happens behind the scenes, and the many challenges that grassroots football face, when trying to influence and help shape policy making decisions.

Working jointly with others, the forum aims to instigate change across all areas of grassroots football including governance, training and facilities, and will work closely with decision makers to support changes that progress the BAME agenda.

The BAME Football Forum event, At the Grass Root of Racism, will see attendees from the semi professional and professional game, the Local and National FA's, Universities, the Police and the Police Crime Commissioners, the Local authority, National campaign groups and more. The forum is also urging non BAME clubs and members to attend the event and to be part of the conversations.

On the day, you will hear from victims of discrimination and racial abuse, as they share their heartfelt stories on the lasting effects of racism in football, which will include experiences of adults and young people.

There will be a presentation by the BAME Football Forum, highlighting results from a recent survey on discrimination, as well as sharing plans for future working with communities and governing bodies.

We will also hear from current or ex Professional/ Semi-Professional players about their journey in football and the challenges they faced on and off the pitch.

There will be a summary and closing of the event outlining next steps, one of which will be a short feedback report/ recommended actions from the event that can be fed back to stakeholders to inform future planning.
