How new is atheism? We’ve been told so many times, by both its adherents and its attackers, that atheism is a product of the western secular enlightenment, but is that really true? Join Prof. Tim Whitmarsh, A.G. Leventis Professor of Greek Culture, as he looks to ancient history for evidence that atheism might be a more widespread feature of human civilisation than many wish to admit. There are few ‘lessons’ that the ancient world (with its slavery, degradation of women, war…) can teach us, but looking to the past can sometimes help us reframe issues in the present, and give us pointers towards a better future.
