Event description

Description

The School of Medicine is preparing a ‘Departmental Restructuring Interim Award Application’ and your feedback is crucial for us to help inform the action plan for our application. Athena SWAN is not just a box-ticking exercise – it galvanizes discussion, activity and actions which benefit everyone.

Who should attend: Male and female research staff (on 21st June) and PSS and technical staff (on 5th July) from SMS are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Refreshments: A lunch will be provided from 12.45, meeting to start at 1pm.

Objectives of the focus group:

  • To inform the Athena SWAN self-assessment team about the real experiences of people working in SMS. This will be an important element of the eventual submission and will complement other fact-finding activities.

  • To provide a networking opportunity for staff working in SMS to share experiences.

  • To highlight good practice and to identify areas where the school could develop alternative approaches to best support your career development, provide a supportive working environment and a good work-life balance.

  • Discussion and ideas raised in his meeting will help us create our action plan, activities and actions which benefit all

Background information: The Athena SWAN Charter was established by the Equality Challenge Unit (http://www.ecu.ac.uk/equality-charters/athena-swan/about-athena-swan/) in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in STEMM employment in higher education and research. May 2015 saw the Charter expand to include non-STEMM Schools, PSS staff, technical staff and Trans staff and students and it also now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly. Athena SWAN awards are received in recognition of the work done towards equality of opportunity for all staff and evidence of positive cultural changes within our University and individual Schools.
