Event description

Description

Many children who have experienced separation, loss, abuse and/or neglect will not relate to the world in typical ways and they spend their day trying to ‘survive’, rather than thrive. Their behaviours can be mystifying to those around them, and traditional disciplinary approaches which rely on rewards and sanctions (and form the basis of many a school's behaviour policy) simply do not work as they might with other children. They need something different.

This is an introductory half-day course aimed at people who work with and support vulnerable children in education settings of all varieties, so is suitable for the following:

Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Mentors, SENCOs, Speech and Language Therapists, Nursery Nurses, Youth Workers, Pastoral Care Workers, Family Support Workers, Private Tutors, or other professionals working with children.

The course will be delivered by an experienced trainer who is also a qualified teacher and adoptive parent to two siblings, and covers:

  • Trauma

  • Attachment

  • Impact of trauma and attachment on brain development

  • Recognising different attachment styles

  • A number of considerations and practical strategies for supporting children with attachment difficulties and/or impacted by trauma

Delegates should leave the workshop armed with a better awareness and understanding of key issues and research into trauma and attachment, how attachment and trauma-related difficulties present in children's behaviour, and some strategies to employ to support these children in education settings. There will be opportunities for discussion and sharing of good practice between delegates.
