Event description

Course Title: Attendance at Committee

Length: 2 hours

Target Audience: This in-house training is aimed at officers who may have to attend Council or Committee meetings as part of their role - whether that’s to speak to reports they may have written, to answer questions from elected members or to provide advice. The training will be more beneficial to officers who have had less exposure to Council or Committee meetings but it should serve as a useful refresher for those who have had more experience in that environment.

The training will:-

  • Provide the opportunity for attendees to view scenarios at previous meetings, with an analysis of proceedings, and discussion on how participants might handle certain situations and suggestions for improvement

  • Outline key areas of Standing Orders that officers should be aware of when attending Council or Committee meetings

  • Consider different styles of questioning that may be expected from elected members - using the Centre for Public Scrutiny as a baseline

  • Allow attendees to hear from an officer with extensive experience of speaking at meetings and answering questions from elected members

  • Provide a third person perspective in terms of communication and promotion - i.e. considering media implications

  • Generate participation and interaction via snapshots of a mock Committee meeting

  • Provide an opportunity for general discussion and/or questions in relation to the committee process
